I was given the task to take an image from the internet and then load them into After Effects to animate a still image over time to solve a problem in time.
For this task, I had to load a photograph of the shard with a plane looming above into After Effects to make the plane move from one side of the image to the other whilst going behind the shard using different tools within After Effects in order to achieve this successfully.
To begin, I had to load the image into Photoshop in order to place the image into different layers. The first layer was the shard. I did this by using the magic wand tool to select the shard and then duplicate this as another layer and then cut the shard out from the top layer. In order to get rid of this used the "fill" tool on "content aware" so that the area that the shard would have been in, is now filled with background. However, this did not go so well because the sun that was in the background had been duplicated when I filled the area in so I i had to refine this to the best of my ability but. I then did the same for the plane, using the magic wand tool and refining the edges so that they were smooth rather than crisp in order to blend in more successfully with the background. I then saved all the layers as photoshop files so that I could use them later in After Effects.
Next, I opened these separate layers in After Effects.
Then, I used the position tool under the transform tab to set the starting position of the plane and the final position of the plane within the frame so that the plane was moving from one point to the other. I then used the scale tool so that as the plane flew further away the scale of the plane decreased.
I then dragged the sky layer into the timeline and used the position tool to make it seem like the sky is moving.
Next, I used the position tool again to make the shard move in the opposite direction to the way that the sky and plane were moving so that it looks like the photographer has panned the shot.
I then made final adjustments such as the scale of the shard and the speed at which the plane was moving.
Below is my After Effects experimentation. I think that it turned out great and it seems pretty realistic but at the same time I like the way that parts do not look as realistic.
