GIF Tutorial

An animated GIF or 'Graphics Interchange Format' is a graphic image on a web page which moves. A GIF contains a set of photographs that are shown in a specific order. A GIF can be looped, or it can run the animation once and stop.

Tutorial on how to create a GIF on photoshop below:

1. Import a set photographs.

Firstly open up photoshop and go to File - Scripts - Load Files into Stack. Click browse and then find the set of photographs that you would like to import, then click ok to load all the files into a single layered file.

Each individual file has now got its own layer which can be found in the layer palette on the right side of the screen. These layers will later become the frames for the animated GIF.

2. Open up the timeline.

Go to Window - Timeline to open the timeline panel. In the centre of the timeline at the bottom of the screen should be a button, click it and then select 'create frame animation' and then click the button to create a frame animation.

3. Convert layers into animation frames.

Click the menu button located in the top right corner within the timeline panel, then click 'make frames from layers'. By doing this, it turns all the layers in the layers palette into individual frames for the animated GIF.

4. Set animation to loop.

Click on the repeat menu on the bottom of the timeline an then select 'forever'. This creates a animated GIF which loops and continuously plays.

Press spacebar or the play button to watch the GIF as a preview.

5. Export the animated GIF.

Click on File - Save for web.
  • Select GIF 128 dithered in the preset menu.
  • Select 256 from the colours menu.
  • Select forever in the looping options menu.
Then click save and save it into any desired location.

The animated GIF is now complete, below is my final animated GIF.

below is another GIF that I produced by using the same instructions which are above.

Harold Edgerton: High Speed Image

Harold Eugene Edgerton who is also known as 'Papa Flash'. He was an electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He is hugely credited for the transformation of the stroboscope from an unknown laboratory instrument, into a common device. Edgerton was also involved in the development of deep-sea photography and sonar. Edgerton was born in Nebraska on April 6 1903. Edgerton also grew up in Nebraska and later spent some of his childhood in Washington D.C.  Edgerton credited Charles Stark Draper for inspiring him to photographing everyday objects with the use of an electronic flash. In 1937, Edgerton started what was a lifelong association with a photographer named Gjon Milii. He used numerous studio electronic flash units, to create stunningly striking photographs. When taking multi flash photographs, the strobe lighting was able to flash up to 120 times a second. Edgerton was the p...

Experimental Short Sequence of Movement

Tutorial on how to create a short sequence of movement (Time-lapse) The first thing that you want to do is open the images that you would like to use for the short sequence of movement.  In order to do this you need to go to File - Open.  This opens up a tab in the middle of the screen you then want to locate the folder which has all the image that you have shot of the sequence of movement. Once you have found the folder you then want to open it and select the first image and then click on the 'open image sequence button' This then opens up a smaller tab with the frame rate option. I found that 24 fps worked the best for my short sequences of movement. The time-lapse should now have loaded into photoshop and will be visible in the centre of the screen and each individual frame can be seen in the timeline at the bottom of the screen. You then want to go to File - Export - Render Video. ...

Koyaanisqatsi

Koyaanisqatsi meaning life out of balance is an experimental American film which was produced in 1982. Koyaanisqatsi was filmed between the years of 1975-1882. The film tries to show an apocalyptic vision of collision of two completely different worlds. urban life and technology versus the environment.  The film mainly consists of time-lapse and slow motion footage of natural landscapes and cities across the United States. The tone of the film is set by the juxtaposition of photographs and music. I think that the most interesting scene of the film is when it shows a time-lapse of a crowd moving and then disappearing all of a sudden, it make sit satisfying to watch. Its almost like watching ants swarming in a nest. This scene can be seen below.
