Unit 7 (Time) Project Evaluation

Throughout the project I have been inspired by many photographers which has led me to experiment with different processes and methods to produce multiple works based on the the photographers that have been the sources of my inspiration in order to solve a problem in time. The most successful pieces of work that I have produced have to be the lumen pinhole print and my narrative. My narrative was created on Premier Pro to show a story of a snowman being built over a length of time. Using this process to create my narrative, it has given me some ideas that I may apply and really utilize in my future projects. I created my lumen pinhole print with a drinks can which had a acupuncture sizes hole in it to expose the light sensitive paper over the course of three months. I really enjoyed this process and I think that I will try this again sometime in the future as a personal project. This was a rather lengthy process to set up and the results are uncertain but this uncertainty has made me want to try it again. I think that I could have extended my experimentation further with the sequences of movement as they were very basic time-lapses of the sky and moving trains.

What I have learnt from this project is that when capturing sequences of movement and stop motions, I should take my environment into consideration such as the lighting scenarios and the weather if shooting outside. It is hard to keep these conditions exactly the same through out a shoot. I also learnt that it is possible to use basic items that I would have never thought of using to create photographic works such as the drinks can lumen pinhole print. I learnt that patience of waiting for a print to develop and expose to light really pays off in the end and you can end up with an absolutely stunning and successful piece of work.

Harold Edgerton: High Speed Image

Harold Eugene Edgerton who is also known as 'Papa Flash'. He was an electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is hugely credited for the transformation of the stroboscope from an unknown laboratory instrument, into a common device. Edgerton was also involved in the development of deep-sea photography and sonar. Edgerton was born in Nebraska on April 6 1903. Edgerton also grew up in Nebraska and later spent some of his childhood in Washington D.C. Edgerton credited Charles Stark Draper for inspiring him to photographing everyday objects with the use of an electronic flash. In 1937, Edgerton started what was a lifelong association with a photographer named Gjon Milii. He used numerous studio electronic flash units, to create stunningly striking photographs. Experimental Short Sequence of Movement

Tutorial on how to create a short sequence of movement (Time-lapse) The first thing that you want to do is open the images that you would like to use for the short sequence of movement. In order to do this you need to go to File - Open. This opens up a tab in the middle of the screen you then want to locate the folder which has all the image that you have shot of the sequence of movement. Once you have found the folder you then want to open it and select the first image and then click on the 'open image sequence button' This then opens up a smaller tab with the frame rate option. I found that 24 fps worked the best for my short sequences of movement. The time-lapse should now have loaded into photoshop and will be visible in the centre of the screen and each individual frame can be seen in the timeline at the bottom of the screen. Koyaanisqatsi

Koyaanisqatsi meaning life out of balance is an experimental American film which was produced in 1982. Koyaanisqatsi was filmed between the years of 1975-1882. The film tries to show an apocalyptic vision of collision of two completely different worlds. urban life and technology versus the environment. The film mainly consists of time-lapse and slow motion footage of natural landscapes and cities across the United States. The tone of the film is set by the juxtaposition of photographs and music. I think that the most interesting scene of the film is when it shows a time-lapse of a crowd moving and then disappearing all of a sudden, it make sit satisfying to watch. Its almost like watching ants swarming in a nest. This scene can be seen below.
